Chapter 7

“I’m telling you… Something just ain’t right about that boy!” The rider, Billy Hatchett, shoved his hands in his pockets and scowled. “Screamed just like a little girl.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have been trying to run into him.” Culver Daniel, the livery owner, quietly spoke from his spot beside the rider’s horse. He lifted the horse’s hoof to examine it.

“Why not? That’s how races are won.”

“It’s not how we like to win here in Noelle,” the gentle giant mumbled. He placed the horse’s hoof back down. “There’s nothing broken, but I’m not too sure I’d ride her again. Her legs are fine but it’s obvious her body is tired.”

“Aw, go on with you.” Billy shooed him away. “So long as the horse can race, that’s all that matters to me. I aim me to get five hundred dollars.”

Culver’s eyes flashed, but he only shook his head.

Diego could understand his frustration. He liked to win, too, but he wouldn’t run a single one of his horses into the ground just to make it happen. He didn’t like other men who did, either.

“You should have more concern for that horse,” he advised.

“And you should have more concern for that Calico character,” Billy countered. “Like, I said—something ain’t right with him.”

“He’s talking straight,” Elmer said. “I’ve had my suspicions, too. There’s just something about him that I can’t quite place my finger on. It feels real familiar, though.”

“Yeah,” Billy agreed. “Familiar… and still strange.”

Diego chuckled. He could say a whole lot about how strange it really was. However, he wasn’t going to. He had made Cora a promise. Besides, he kind of liked the way she went against the grain. Well, not completely. Was there anyone who liked one hundred percent of what someone else did all the time? Did he even want a lady like that? If he recalled correctly, that was one of the reasons he didn’t care much for the women back in his hometown of Blessings. Still, it would be nice if Cora wasn’t the focus of malicious gossip.

Like right now.

“I say we tail him—find out what he’s about,” Billy suggested.

“Might be a good idea,” Elmer agreed.

Diego straightened up. “You’ll do no such a thing—either of you.” He looked from one man to the other, his face set to the meanest scowl he thought he could muster up. “The rider hasn’t done anything but place well—which is the reason I’m sure you’re so sore, Billy. Maybe if you hadn’t tried to cheat, you wouldn’t have come in fourth.”

“I wasn’t cheating!”

“What do you call spooking another rider?”

“Winning!”

“Yeah, well, try winning like that again and you won’t be riding in this competition. You got that?”

Billy stared at Diego for a hard minute. He finally decided it wasn’t worth the fight and chose to walk away, but not before showing his intense dissatisfaction by spitting on the ground between them.

“Hey, now.” Elmer stepped to Diego’s side. “That wasn’t necessary.”

Billy looked from one man to the other before giving his head a shake and walking away.
